Electronic data interchange (EDI), which allows companies to exchange business messages in a standardized form, plays an important role in achieving ECR objectives by enabling an efficient flow of information between trading partners. Even though the benefits of EDI are indisputable today, the traditional EDI technology is complex and is used mostly by large corporations. However, EDI over the Internet and the use of Internet technology make it easier for smaller companies to utilize EDI.
This paper is based on a master’s thesis published in Helsinki School of Economics in May 1999, and it discusses the possibilities of small and medium-sized businesses to make use of Internet-based EDI for Efficient Replenishment.
